On 24 March 1935, Mary Berry was born to Margaret and Alleyne William Steward Berry in Bath, Somerset. She is second born in the family of 3 children. At age 13 years, she was diagnosed with polio, which resulted in her having a twisted spine and stayed in the hospital for three months.

Mary Berry attended Bath High school and then later joined college and studied domestic science and graduated with an institutional and catering management certificate. She also did study at Le Cordon Bleu School in France, before working in a number of cooking-related jobs.
