Carol Zhao is a Canadian professional tennis player who came into the limelight after winning the junior doubles title at the 2013 Australian Open. For a brief while in 2018, from June 11 to July 23, she was Canada’s top-ranked singles player. During her college career, she led the Stanford Cardinal tennis team to the 2016 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Championships. She finished her college career with a sublime 76-16 win-loss record and was the runner-up at the singles event during the 2015 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Championships. Carol also won the Gold medal at the doubles event of the 2015 Pan American Games.

Carol Zhao Facts

She began playing tennis from the age of 5 after one of her grade school teachers encouraged her to pick up the sport.

When she was 7 years old, her family left China and emigrated to Canada. Her family settled down in Richmond Hill, Ontario but she moved to Montreal for a few years (2010-2013) to practice at the National Training Centre.

In July 2010, she won 3 successive junior singles – the G5 in Edmonton, the G4 in Vancouver, and the G5 in Manitoba.

Her first professional title came at the doubles event of the July 2013 Challenger Banque Nationale de Granby in Quebec.

She was named the ‘Female Junior Player of the Year’ by Tennis Canada in 2013.

Carol’s first professional singles title came in September 2017, at a 25k ITF International Tennis Federation event, in Nanao, Japan. She followed that up with another ITF singles title, this time at a 100k event in Shenzhen, China, in November 2017.
